With three unique rail routes each showcasing Western Canada’s most spectacular scenery, traveling between Vancouver and the Canadian Rockies onboard Rocky Mountaineer offers an unparalleled way to travel.
While the dramatic scenery of the Canadian Rockies is a big draw, catching a glimpse of the wildlife that calls this area home is a highlight for many Rocky Mountaineer guests! I was fortunate enough to witness a rare white grizzly mama bear and her cubs on my recent journey. While sightings are never guaranteed, below are some tips to increase your chances!
Book a spring or fall vacation: These two seasons are the best for wildlife watching, whether from the comfort of Rocky Mountaineer, or out in the national parks.
Take a day tour: Rocky Mountaineer works with local tour operators in Banff and Jasper to curate packages that feature tours and activities. Taking a tour with professionals maximizes your chances of seeing animals while you’re exploring.
Know what to look for: The national parks are where most of the wildlife roams, so if you’re heading out on your own, familiarize yourself with wildlife that might be in the area.
Plan your day around the animals: In general, animals are most active early in the morning and late in the afternoon.
Stay safe: When you’re in the parks, make sure you respect the animals, giving them plenty of room and watching them for any sign that they might feel threatened. Finally, never feed them!
Your taste for adventure isn’t the only thing that’s indulged on a Rocky Mountaineer train journey. Traveling between Vancouver and the Canadian Rockies, what you’ll find on your plate is almost as impressive as what’s outside the glass-dome windows. Delicious multi-course breakfasts and lunches are served onboard each day you’re on the train, created by Rocky Mountaineer’s professional culinary team.
Those traveling in GoldLeaf Service head downstairs to the dedicated dining room for meals, while those in SilverLeaf Service are served right at the seat. Breakfast onboard is taken seriously—you have a full day of “oohing” and “ahhing” to prepare for—and could include options such as a smoked salmon and egg scramble or cinnamon French toast with Canadian maple syrup, all served with freshly baked pastries and seasonal fruit. At lunch, you might find yourself making the tough choice between Alberta beef and wild Pacific salmon. Luckily for you, every choice is the right one.
Much of the inspiration for the menus comes from what you’ll see along the way, with fresh ingredients sourced seasonally from British Columbia and Alberta. In fact, some routes pass right by the farms that supply Rocky Mountaineer, such as Desert Hills Ranch in Ashcroft, just west of Kamloops. To complement your meals (or just your conversation), premium British Columbia wines from the Okanagan Valley are also served onboard, along with local craft beer. Together with gourmet snacks served throughout the journey, the wine, beer and high-end spirits are all complimentary—and all perfect for toasting your adventure.
With a Rocky Mountaineer train journey, everything is included—from engaging commentary and delicious meals and drinks, to comfortable overnight accommodation. All that is left is for you to just sit back and enjoy the ride!
I have experienced this amazing journey personally and am happy to answer any questions you may have and get you booked on this journey of a lifetime!
